The rain stopped the sun came out, so did we, to explore Marple and test my very early memories of it, our family upped sticks and moved to Glossop when I was about seven years old, but I can remember parts of Marple well ( I think, soon see, ) I could find my way to our old house from the high street, and on the way pass my first school, ( no good memories there ) the cinema is still here and externally as I remember it, and still is a cinema surprisingly ( I can remember having to leave a film, as either mum or myself was too frightened, I have seen it since it's a Walt Disney !! What a wimp, ) I was surprised at how close to the canal we lived, I must have walked over bridge No 2 daily, maybe I was too small to see over the wall ? I do remember the locks though, very scary as a child, they worried my parents too, for my brother Derek and I had swimming lessons at an early age.
Now pedestrianised, Mum worked in a fruit and veg shop ( gone ) top right of picture.
Older but not much wiser, fifty years on from my first day here, hated it, didn't we all ?
Number 72 our old house, still in good order.
The cinema, scene of much terror, think the film was the Castaways, ( the shame of it )
Unusual shape of tunnel passing under the road, presumably shaped for the horse and strength
.
Looking down the Marple sixteen.
Memorial in the park, a nice open space with a few memories for me.
Near the bottom end of the lock flight.
We have to start our move tomorrow towards Bollington to meet Phil, who is paying us a flying visit, we both look forward to seeing him, we think he is just checking that the dogs are being well looked after.
The weather forecast is better for Friday, and sun for Saturday, we will see.
I would like to have spent longer here, maybe we will pop back, ( as if as you can pop anywhere in a narrow boat ) and see a bit more, or try to go to Glossop ( no canal ) by bus, and check it out too.
Bye for now,
Baz and Ali.
Looks like quite a nice place - know what you mean about school. Every time I'm within a few miles of Bishop's I get chills.
