Composting toilets, Here we go.

Our intention, while living an a narrow boat has always been to explore at our leisure, when we find a nice spot we enjoy lingering there. We are always governed by a few factors, food, water, and waste disposal, the water will last for 10 days + depending on use, food, well stock up or pick up bits as we go, toilet waste is a bit more of a problem,  we have found ourself s making decisions based on the availability of elsan disposal points. They are not as common as we would like, or where you need them to be, twice they have been closed for repair ( one had been closed for months ) another was in a state that I will not try to describe to you, we have had plenty of experience with elsan points with our caravan and motor home days without a problem. Some marinas will let you use their elsan points for a small fee, others are just not equipped for this service. We have three cassettes for the loo, this means we can stay out for a week comfortably, though we do have to store the full cassettes somewhere, so we have made a decision, we are going to fit a composting loo and take the cassette toilet out.
The unit we have chosen is the Airhead loo, from the states, originally designed for west coast cruising boats,

Air head composting loo.

We have been in touch with a narrow boat  N B Valerie ( thanks again ) who have one fitted and love it, they say it needs attention every 4 to 5 weeks, no smells or dramas, although part of us both remains a little sceptical, until proven otherwise, we have ordered one and hope to have completed fitting it by the time Ali gets back to the boat.

Cassette about to be emptied at a clean well build facility, on a camp site .

Not such a good example.

So, we hope the worry and restriction of loo  " admin " will be a thing of the past. Now, how do we get a bigger water tank in the bow ? no ,only joking Ali, we do fine with what we have, and water taps are more frequent along the cut.
The rain has not stopped since yesterday afternoon, so its a, in boat day today, the stove has been lit again, so the dogs are happy, if a bit bored, they , like me want to go and have a look around, I may have to buy a loaf of bread for the first time in seven months!!

For Ali, as requested.

Can't have one without the other.

We will keep you up-to-date with our movements ( no, the boat movements !! ) as things progress,

Bye for now,
Baz and the dogs.

  1. Hi Baz,
I hope you find the Airhead a wise choice; nb Valerie's crew came upon it via us on Cleddau (we moored in front of you a few weeks ago near New Mills on the Upper Peak Forest). We have been firm advocates of this system since installing it in 2010. We'll be coming down the Macc Sunday/Monday (Chester-bound) so we'll give you a wave if we see you.
